Our large Clinic for Internal Medicine in Bethel – Gilead I – provides the basic internal medical care for citizens in central Bielefeld and its southern suburbs. Additionally, the clinic focuses on cardiology and angiology, nephrology, pneumology including sleep medicine and interdisciplinary Lung Centre, as well as internal intensive care medicine.

The area of cardiology and angiology covers the complete diagnostics and therapy of diseases of the heart, circulation and vascular system. Focuses of cardiac treatment are coronary heart disease, cardiac insufficiency, valve defects and cardiac arrythmia. There is also a heart catheter laboratory at the EvKB. For acute therapy there is, in addition to the intensive care unit, a well-equipped admission ward with monitoring facilities. For highly specialised diagnostics, we work closely with the Cardiologic and Cardiac Surgery Department of the Heart Centre NRW in Bad Oeynhausen.

Our Nephrology Department is the largest specialist department of its kind in East Westfalia. It offers all the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques of modern nephrology. In addition to 35 dialysis places, a Home-Dialysis-Centre of the Patient Home Care Service is attached. The Nephrology Outpatient Department also cares for kidney transplantation patients requiring pre-OP preparation and after-care. A nephrology on-call service is provided in close co-operation with outlying Dialysis Centres.

Our Department for Pneumology, together with our Thoracic Surgery Department, constitutes the Lung Centre at the EvKB. We treat patients suffering from ailments of the lungs and respiratory tract, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive respiratory tract diseases (bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, lung emphysema), diseases of the pulmonary framework, cancerous diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract, diseases of the pleura and work-related illnesses of the respiratory organs. We offer a three-day training programme for asthma patients. In the adjacent sleep laboratory we treat people with sleep-associated breathing disorders (obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome) and instruct them in nasal-mask-respiration (CPAP-therapy).

The clinic is also equipped with a large functional area (including a Gastroenterology Department) and an Internal Medicine Intensive Care Unit. The Internal Medicine and Neurology Departments jointly run an interdisciplinary Stroke Unit.
